In Phuket during the low season, news of rescued — and unfortunately, sometimes missing — tourists appears almost daily. This is due to rip currents and strong waves. A rip current is a powerful stream of water pulling swimmers away from the shore. If you get caught in one, don’t swim against it — stay calm and swim parallel to the shore to escape the current.
Always pay attention to the flags on the beach. A red flag means swimming is strictly prohibited in that area. Only enter the water on busy beaches where lifeguards are present. Never swim at night or alone, even if you're a confident swimmer.
Swimming in the sea is possible — just stay alert. And remember, there are also wave-free beaches in Phuket — check out our posts to learn more.
